We are driven by the belief that films crafted by Black British voices can reveal the complexities, beauty, and authenticity of diverse experiences, creating a bridge of understanding and empathy across cultures.
We are more than a film sales company; we are a movement to reshape and reimagine the cinematic landscape. Our mission is to amplify Black British voices by providing filmmakers with the resources, guidance, and market access they need to achieve sustainable success. We focus on developing strong relationships with distributors, streaming platforms, and global film festivals to ensure these unique stories gain the visibility they deserve.
AfroFilms UK was founded by Maskelah Gabriel-Adams, a filmmaker and academic dedicated to championing Black British cinema. With a BA in Filmmaking from Nottingham Trent University and an MA in Film Distribution and Marketing from Birmingham City University, Maskelah’s passion for storytelling runs deep. Her journey began at Marché du Film in Cannes, where an internship with GFM Animations ignited her interest in the challenges Black British filmmakers face in distribution. This inspired her MA dissertation and a documentary, Ceilings of Glass, featuring interviews with industry leaders like Sheila Nortley and Emmanuel Anyam-Osigwe. Their stories fueled her vision to create AfroFilms UK—a platform committed to sharing Black British stories with the world.
